So, yesterday as I was enjoying the sun on a lunchtime stroll, meandering throughout the Gramercy Park Farmers Market. It was hot, so white tents were erected over each stall. And amid the bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and breads was a man with Ostrich steaks and jerky. I had to try. I didn't feel bad about the ostrich, it's not cute...in fact, they're actually kind of scary. The large yellow eyes and aggressive demeanor of these overgrown birds doesn't nothing for their reputation. I think I have a repressed memory of driving through some safari theme park when I was a kid with a few of these birds pecking not-so-gently on the windows of the car. I think I recall there were tears. It's was nothing like this experience.
But I digress. So what's it taste like? Well, beef jerky.
Other than the salt making my blood pressure skyrocket, I can't believe that doesn't really taste much different. It's smokey, salty and meaty. Texturewise, it's a little tougher but other than that its jerky. Then again. That's fine by me.
The farm is called Roaming Acres in Fredon, NJ for anyone who likes to know.
Like squirrels, racoons, and (o)possums, ostritches fall in that category of cranky and annoying animals just begging to be eaten. I wish squirrels tasted better. Would save us the hassle of transporting meat to MW.
